The Road Safety Trust

Our grant themes

From 2019, each round of funding available from the Road Safety Trust will have its own theme. There are two rounds of grants per year:

  • Major themed grants open for applications between February and May

  • Smaller grants, not necessarily linked to the main theme, are open for applications between September and December. More information about the Small Grants Programme becomes available over the summer

The theme for the 2019 major grants round was

‘Innovative traffic calming and provision for vulnerable road users’

Major themed grants

We expect the projects funded by the Road Safety Trust to focus on engineering, infrastructure and technological measures, while recognising the contribution of education and enforcement to these measures.

The main objective of any project should always be to help protect vulnerable road users. Funding is available for a maximum of three years. We are committing to funding projects which:

  • Generate new knowledge about what works

  • Translate ideas into new measures

  • Influence Road Safety Policy and Practice

  • Support partnership working or collaboration

Eligible projects might include evidence reviews, trials, roll-outs, evaluations and support for the profession through guidance or other resources.
