Former CEO Sonya Hurt posthumously given ‘Outstanding Contribution’ road safety award
Our former chief executive, Sonya Hurt, posthumously received an Outstanding Contribution Award during the Road Safety GB Annual Awards at National Road Safety Conference last week (4 November).
Sonya sadly passed away earlier this year. She was a dedicated road safety advocate and was well known within the sector having held roles in road safety, safety engineering, traffic management and highway design, in a career spanning 30 years.
Sonya led The Road Safety Trust from July 2022 until November 2023. Prior to this, she had been a valued member of our Board of Trustees, joining in 2020 and serving on the Road Safety Initiatives Committee, before becoming Vice Chair in 2021. She had also been Chair of Road Safety GB from 2016 to 2018.
The award was presented to Gary Astle, Sonya’s partner, by her close friend and former colleague at Road Safety GB, Jackie Bratley.
Reading the citation, Jackie said: “In an ever-changing local government environment, Sonya’s work ethos was to continue to maintain a professional, forward thinking and innovative approach to delivering road safety solutions.
“As well as a work colleague, she was also a friend to many and will be fondly remembered for her kindness, her warm smile and her generous nature.”
