CEO provides keynote insight at ‘future’ road safety event

Chief executive Ruth Purdie OBE was keynote speaker at an event designed to explore future road safety challenges and near-term research and pilot opportunities.

The Road Safety Futures Lab was convened by the Transport Safety Research Centre (TSRC) on 28 January, bringing together a cross-sector group of experts for a ‘working think-tank’ session. It included workshop discussions and opportunities to experience VR and driving simulator studies in the Human Factors lab, with attendees invited to engage openly with realistic, challenging scenarios involving interactions between vehicles and vulnerable road users (VRUs),

The keynote contribution from Ruth set the tone for the day by highlighting a significant missed opportunity in road safety discourse: public support.

Drawing on long-running social research, she emphasised that road safety remains one of the few issues that consistently unites people across political views and age groups with broad public backing for road safety measures, stronger protection for young and novice drivers, and a more ambitious national Road Safety Strategy.
