Project summary

Working alongside the National Police Wellbeing Service the SleepiEST project will address a critical gap in fatigue risk management by developing new and improved, publicly available on-line fatigue management tools to replace the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) tools withdrawn in 2021.

The publicly available revised tools will be based on modelling empirical data collected from a large cohort of shift-working police employees. The predictions derived from modelling these data will be validated against the actual driving risk of on-duty police using on-board telematics.

The project has a particular focus on the commuting aspect of driving which is often overlooked. Findings around the impact of shift work, background factors, and fatigue on sleepiness, cognition and driving within shift working police officers could also result in policy changes.
