Trustee & APCC Representative
David is currently the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, our second largest police force. He has been the PCC representative on the Road Safety Trust since its inception.
As a Police Commissioner and previously as a Transport Minister with responsibility for road safety, David has enthusiastically championed the cause of reducing death on our roads throughout the country. In particular, he campaigned for the widespread introduction of speed safety cameras, safer journeys for children, improved in-car safety and introduced the penalties for using mobiles devices whilst driving. More recently, his Force has embarked on seat belt wearing campaigns as well as bearing down on drink/drug driving.
As an MP (1992-2005), he steered Private Member’s legislation, Activity Centres (Young Persons’ Safety) Act 1995, through Parliament which brought in a regulatory safety framework for children taking part in adventurous outdoor activities. This was a response to the deaths of four of his young constituencies in the Lyme Bay canoe tragedy.
