Project description

This research project aims to give a clearer picture of cycling safety by looking at risk per kilometre travelled rather than just injury numbers. It will compare route environmental characteristics of sites where cyclists were injured with ‘control’ sites along their routes prior to injury. The project will deliver a research report and a stakeholder report and training on how to develop policy and practice based on the results.

The aim of the project is to enable enforcement and planning agencies to identify high-risk routes, even if injuries are currently low. This will enable authorities to quantify impacts of infrastructural and policy changes on route-level cycling risk and injuries, taking into account changes in motor vehicle and cycling flows, including ‘safety in numbers’ effects.
